About Bishop McCarthy

Born September 4, 1927 in Houston, Texas, McCarthy graduated from St. Thomas High School in Houston and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of St. Thomas (also in Houston), where he went on to receive a master’s degree in theology.

McCarthy was ordained into the priesthood May 25, 1956 and appointed Bishop of the Austin Diocense on Christmas Eve, 1985. He served in that role until his retirement in 2001.
